Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace and to think about the importance of meaningful employment opportunities for everyone.

At Trillium, we see the impact of inclusive employment every day.

People with disabilities have skills, interests, goals, and talents to bring to the workplace. They want to work, contribute to their teams, build relationships with coworkers, and be part of their communities. When people have the opportunity to do that, everyone benefits.

Employment is about more than a job

A job can provide much more than a paycheck.

Meaningful employment can help people build confidence, develop new skills, connect with others, and become more involved in their communities. It can create a sense of purpose and belonging while giving people the opportunity to contribute in ways that matter to them.

That is why inclusive employment is such an important part of building inclusive communities.

At Trillium, we work with individuals and employers to create employment opportunities that are a good fit. We listen to what people are interested in and what they want to accomplish, while also working with businesses to identify opportunities where employees can contribute and succeed.

Employers have an important role to play

Creating a more inclusive workplace does not always require a major change.

Sometimes it starts with taking a closer look at how positions are designed, being open to different ways of doing a job, or giving someone the opportunity to show what they can do.

It can also mean looking beyond assumptions about disability.

A person’s disability does not tell you everything about their abilities, work ethic, interests, or potential contributions. Getting to know the person and understanding their strengths can open the door to possibilities that might otherwise be overlooked.

Employers can make a difference by creating welcoming workplaces, considering qualified candidates with disabilities, and making sure employees have the support they need to succeed.

Inclusion benefits the whole community

When people with disabilities are included in the workforce, they are more connected to the places where they live, work, and spend their time.

They become coworkers, neighbors, customers, volunteers, and community members. Their contributions become part of the everyday life of their communities.

That is what inclusion looks like in practice.

It is not about doing something for people with disabilities. It is about making sure people have opportunities to participate, contribute, and belong.

This October, look for opportunities to include

National Disability Employment Awareness Month gives all of us a reason to pause and consider what inclusive employment looks like in our own communities.

For employers, that might mean taking another look at your hiring practices or considering how you can make your workplace more accessible and welcoming.

For coworkers, it might mean getting to know someone based on who they are rather than making assumptions about their disability.

For community members, it might simply mean recognizing and celebrating the many ways people with disabilities contribute to the places we call home.

At Trillium, our mission is to promote inclusive community and employment opportunities. We believe everyone has something meaningful to contribute, and we are proud to work alongside individuals, employers, and communities to help create those opportunities.

This October, let’s recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and keep making room for everyone at the table, in the workplace, and in our communities.
